The dangers of playing favourites with your children.
Shakespeare’s powerful epic and crowning masterpiece.
When the mighty, venerable King Lear abdicates, he divides his kingdom by means of a test; which of his daughters loves him most. His youngest, Cordelia, refuses to play along. Lear, his vanity hurt, cruelly banishes her.
Stripped of power, Lear is abused shamefully by his other daughters Goneril and Regan. The kingdom descends into anarchy and Lear, abandoned by all but a few loyal followers, wanders crazed on a wind-blasted heath, cursing mankind for its cruelty and hypocrisy.
One of the greatest works in Western literature, Shakespeare’s King Lear is an epic story of power, loyalty, jealousy and betrayal, and a profoundly moving study of human frailty and the nature of love. Shifting its focus from family to community, to country and beyond, this play questions the very centre of our moral being.
Celebrate the 20th year of Bell Shakespeare as John Bell leads some of Australia’s most respected actors and exciting new talent in Marion Potts’ richly poetic production.

The telling of this unwieldy tragedy is intelligent and sharply paced, and Bell, in his third assault on the Shakespearean summit, offers a judiciously governed performance as the misguided monarch. Sydney Morning Herald 12 March 2010
Bell is one of our finest classical actors and he can make Shakespeare’s language sharp and contemporary. The Australian 12 March 2010
John Bell plays King Lear for the third time and his absolute command of the character results in a subtle, poignant portrait of a man in crisis. Daily Telegraph 15 March 2010
